   The story was first published in 1924. There is nothing in the story, however, that places it in any particular time. That is, it could easily be set in any era.

   Can you imagine how shocking the story must have been to the pre-World War II audience? Today, we can name countless stories of people who have committed crimes much more heinous than that of Zaroff. But the original audience of this story must have found it terribly unrealistic.
